Eight rivers
It's hard to believe that, in the past,
Ocho RÃos was a sleepy fishing village. Today the landscape that is presented
to visitors is completely different: tourists everywhere, most of them coming
from the many cruise ships. In short, we may not be at the level of Montego
Bay, but almost. The beaches are not the only attraction in Ocho RÃos, because
around this wonderful place there are endless destinations full of beauty that
should not be missed. The most famous beach in this area is Ocho RÃos Bay
Beach.
One of the things you cannot miss is Dunn's
River Falls, the most famous in Jamaica, which, for this very reason, is always
a bit crowded although it is still spectacular. One of the most photographed places,
about 180 meters of moving water that flows from one natural terrace to
another. With the help of a guide, it is also possible to climb to the top, go
down a safe path, and plunge into the cool lagoon for a quick swim.
On the outskirts of the city, the Blue Hole
is worth a visit. A magical place that consists of a series of picturesque
pools in the middle of the jungle, just 25 minutes by car from Ocho RÃos. It is
accessed from a small lagoon employing a rope swing, a bit like Tarzan. Later,
following the guide, you go up a short path of about 10 minutes to a huge
waterfall. There is a cave down there that will surprise you.
For a tropical adrenaline rush, we
recommend Mystic Mountain Rainforest Adventure. The chairlift, perched in the
jungle of the river, is something unique. There are also roller coasters. On
the other hand, Dolphin Cove is the marine park that is home to the beloved
dolphins.
The Nine Mile Village Tour takes you to the
birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley. If you liked his music, you can't miss
the Bob Marley Museum. You can enter the singer's cabin, two simple rooms full
of memories, with many original photographs that tell his most intimate life.
Next to the little house is the so-called Bob Marley mausoleum, where the
artist was buried. In the small shop, you can find all kinds of souvenirs,
while the restaurant offers only vegetarian cuisine. Every February 6, Bob
Marley's birthday, there are concerts which are very popular with reggae fans.
Runaway Bay
Runaway Bay is a renowned place that shines
with its light. All thanks to a beach characterized by the typical white sand
of the Greater Antilles, very fine, with the advantage of being much less
frequented than other more famous places.
However, Runaway Bay has nothing to envy
the competition: in a context of great relaxation and tranquility, here you can
better appreciate the many beauties of nature and enjoy the true Caribbean
atmosphere. In the period between January and May, you will find the best
weather conditions to enjoy this magic. The wind is dry, the rains are very
rare and the heat is more bearable. The weather becomes more humid from June to
November with widespread cloudiness. Hurricanes? Between July and November, but
these events are not frequent.
The Columbus Park Museum is located in
nearby Discovery Bay, further west. Admission is free, so you can't miss this
open-air exhibition of ancient artifacts that tell the story of a corner of
Jamaica where Christopher Columbus also landed. Founded in 1745 by the British,
the Seville Great House Heritage Park is also open to the public with a
collection of tools used by African slaves - Five Centuries of Jamaican History.
Between Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay are
the Green Grotto Caves - these are limestone caves that were once inhabited by
the Arawaks. They keep the secret of an underground lake in whose water you can
navigate. Here the Spanish troops hid to escape from the British.
Negril
Negril is a good starting point to start
exploring all of Jamaica, in the lush nature, between beautiful waterfalls,
forests, jungles, and dream beaches.
From Negril any excursion is possible, but
in the meantime spending time on Seven Mile Beach is not a bad idea at all. a
strip of white sand about 7 kilometers long, washed by wonderful water.
Strolling through it, walking through the sand, is a very pleasant experience.
You can stop to admire the huts with souvenirs or the craft markets or to have
a cocktail on the beach where you will love the enchanting sunset.
Near Negril is the West End, where you can
see the food markets, small family taverns, and, above all, discover the coral
reefs by snorkeling and its famous cliffs. Those who feel like walking can
climb the 103 steps of the Negril Lighthouse and discover an incomparable view
of the Caribbean Sea. A must-see in the West End is Rick's Café, the famous
place where you can enjoy Jamaican beers while listening to live music with
panoramic views. The West End CliffsThey are famous: from them, the locals, in
exchange for a tip (unless you want to try it yourself), are ready to dive into
the sea drawing pirouettes that are as spectacular as they are fearful because
of their danger. At night, the outdoor party on the beaches is everywhere.
Excursions to YS Falls are organized from
the West End in Saint Elizabeth Parish. A minibus takes you to your destination
in about two hours: just for the scenery and a dip in them, the trip is worth
it. At Bamboo Avenue St Elizabeth a stop along the way will serve to admire the
surroundings and enjoy a coconut milk drink. On the way back, then, you will
have time to stop at the Black River where you can move between crocodiles on a
boat. Speaking of waterfalls, the Mayfields Falls in Hanover Parish is also
worth a visit.
About 10 minutes by car from Negril,
Hedonism II All Inclusive Resort is a very special resort that organizes nudist
weddings, but for those who prefer more traditional solutions, it has all kinds
of services for fishing and fishing, golf, tennis and beach volleyball,
horseback riding, kayak or bike safaris.
Montego Bay
The Sangster International Airport opens
the doors of a popular tourist destination for tourists from around the world:
Montego Bay. Just because of the millions of visitors it receives each year, it
is considered the tourist capital of Jamaica. The climate here is tropical,
with temperatures between 23 and 30 degrees, often accompanied by high
humidity. The crystalline sea offers extraordinary colors that make this place
resemble a paradise on earth: the sand is white, the water has an incomparable
blue as it is brilliant and the tropical vegetation surrounds each landscape
with a thousand shades of green, under a deep blue sky. These forests are home
to colorful birds, starting with toucans and parrots. It is best not to venture
too far (and without guides) in the wildest areas, as you may encounter snakes,
crocodiles, or spiders that are often poisonous.
The beaches of Montego Bay inspire serenity
but are also the ideal backdrop for any sporting activity. Beach Doctor's Cave
Beach is famous because it is believed that the therapeutic waters flow into
it. Along the coast, there is a succession of venues where you can dance to the
rhythm of reggae music, of course. After all, it is in Montego Bay that Reggae
Sumfest has been held every year since 1993.
The Montego Bay Marine Park is a protected
area and stretches along the coast. A true paradise for snorkel lovers, an
ideal environment for tropical fish with a coral reef just a few meters from
the shore. Diving or boat trips: choose the best way to discover and enjoy
these beauties. The center of Montego Bay is worth a visit, every year the
cultural and gastronomic offer increases, in addition to the typical
restaurants and characteristic corners.
Another destination takes us to Rose Hall,
on the outskirts of Montego Bay, a Georgian villa built in the late 18th
century with a rather sinister reputation due to the legend of the White Witch
of Rose Hall. It is said that the lady of the house, Anna Palmer, was a
ruthless assassin capable of eliminating husbands and lovers, buried in
nameless graves. Add to that the ingredients of voodoo rituals and black magic,
and the legend is done. Many tourists who visit the village swear to feel the
presence of the White Witch.
Falmouth
In Falmouth, a small Jamaican town, there
is a well-priced guest house, which has maintained the old Georgian splendor
and has the original Caribbean colonial architecture intact.
From here you can start the excursion to
the Luminous Lagoon Glistening Waters, that is, the Luminous Lagoon. Do you
want to see it? The lagoon has this name the presence of some microorganisms
that light up when they are stimulated, so even when they are touched. An
almost unique phenomenon in the world that begins at sunset, by boat: the tour
lasts about an hour. At a certain point, at sea, the ship's captain will turn
off the lights and all these little moving fluorescent organisms will be
revealed from the water. If you wish, you can take a dip in the sparkling water.
Port Antonio
Many claims that the true Jamaican soul
resides in Port Antonio, strongly tied to tradition and removed from the hustle
and bustle of Montego Bay or Negril. There are many things to see between bays,
rivers, waterfalls, as well as beaches and coves.
If you come to Port Antonio passing through
the mountains called the Blue Mountains, you can take the opportunity to admire
the coffee plantations (one of the best in the world) and the waterfalls
surrounded by lush vegetation, trails that will take your breath away, natural
parks and much more.
After its founding, Port Antonio was lucky
enough to grow bananas. The first tourists arrived right on board the banana
boats, but then they discovered the other Jamaican coast. However, it is always
pleasant to walk through the maze of streets that lead downtown, following the
outline of the two twin ports, separated by the Titchfield peninsula.
At the Errol Flynn Marina / Marina, named
for the actor who fell in love with these places, luxury yachts land. Nearby
you finally reach the town's beach, Bikini Beach, small and flirtatious with
the locals admiring the view of the hillside.
Moving by car, you will reach coastal
destinations and dream beaches: Frenchman's Cave, a paying but wonderful beach,
San San Beach with the sea magically changing color, and the Blue Lagoon that
rises in a 65-meter deep crater with emerald water. Lastly, Winnifred Beach, a
very long and lively Jamaican beach, while Boston Bay is home to surfers and
Long Bay has palm trees and thundering waves.
Kingston
Near Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, the
beaches stand out for the curious color of the almost black sand. This is a
very popular destination for tourists, but not only because of the contrast in
color that the beach stands out with the blue waves and the landscape, in the
background, of the aforementioned Blue Mountains. The stretch of coast is best
known for its festivals and open-air concerts, but also the peripheral
neighborhoods of the capital.
A boat trip of only ten minutes to the
coral islet of Cayo Lime can be wonderful: its beach is small but beautiful, a
real gem.
Hellshire
Hellshire is known for its delicious fried
fish dishes, a local specialty, and for its namesake beach: Hellshire Beach.
The sandy bottom water is safe and very suitable for families with children.
Free-entry beach, with clear, warm, bluish-green waters. There is always reggae
music in the background and after a swim, you can stroll through the craft
stalls, wooden kiosks, and bars, as well as through the typical thatched-roof
restaurants with fish menus.
Boscobel
This is Boscobel - this small town on the
north coast is home to many luxury resorts. It has all the characteristics of
the Caribbean dream: white sand beach, crystal clear water, sun, and palm trees
caressed by the wind. It is no coincidence that Ian Fleming found inspiration
here for his stories based on the adventures of the world's most famous secret
agent - James Bond. Among other things, within walking distance are the beach
called James Bond Beach.
Treasure Beach
Away from the luxury resorts, you will find
the Treasure Beach area, offering relaxation and sunsets to enjoy alone. There
are four beaches: Billy's Bay, Frenchman's Bay, Calabash Bay, and Great Pedro
Bay, all of them with golden or black sand and separated by grassy headlands
full of interlocking paths.
Boston Bay
Beach Boston Bay, called Boston Beach, is
one of the most cared for throughout Jamaica, with its cream-colored fine sand.
It is nestled between large rocks and hit by energetic waves that make it a
perfect setting for surfing. A small cliff divides the beach, full of small and
large trees, as well as various shrubs such as Indian almonds.
Oracabessa
Ian Fleming spent his holidays here and the
setting in which he wrote his stories inspired him for his novels. He lived in
a villa in Oracabessa, 20 kilometers east of Ocho RÃos. A fairy tale place that
has become the setting for some agent 007 movies. One of the main and most
famous scenes is the one in which Ursula Andress, wearing a white bikini, comes
out of the water and was filmed on the beach -the resort of GoldenEye. But you
can certainly understand the mood of the writer, thanks to the landscape also
characterized by rugged forms that alternate with wild environments. In short:
a marvel.
Bluefields
The Bluefields Bay Fish Sanctuary was
created to protect the marine life in the waters of the bay. The Bluefields
Beach has fine sand and is popular with families and groups of friends, shaded
and protected by lush tropical vegetation. It is the ideal place to relax and
snorkel.
Long bay
Long Bay's attraction is the party, simply
put. When the night lights come on, its music bars become the stars of
memorable parties. The beach stretches over seven miles of soft white sand,
full of hotel facilities and all services.
Portmore
The town of Portmore is heavily populated
and is located on the south shore, in the Saint Catherine area. It is connected
to many other beaches, starting with the charming Hellshire Beach. As always,
the sand is special, light, and white. The atmosphere is relaxing, the people
are friendly, and the food is excellent. Take the opportunity to enjoy local
seafood specialties.
